Timeframe and Pricing of Custom Jewellery

The cost of custom jewellery is dependent on a number of factors such as materials used, the complexity of the design and the back and forth process of the design work itself. The time-frame of designing custom jewellery usually takes 7-10 working days from the sign off date.

But we recommend that if you’re looking to design a custom piece such as an engagement ring or a wedding ring that you give us plenty of time before the big day so that we can get your unique piece exactly as you want it.

When you visit us the head Jeweller at Ickinger he’ll be able to give you a better estimation and time-frame depending on your choice of design. But below we will be giving you some general guidelines that you can keep in mind the next time you’re looking at designing a custom piece for yourself or a loved one.

We have also broken down the process into three individual phases of design. Simple, Moderate and full custom so that you have a better idea of what to expect upon your first visit to Ickinger.

Simple Custom

This involves minor modifications to a product within our existing line of jewellery. We can substitute gemstones not offered online, or even use your own gems. We can vary metal choices, making a design that is silver into gold or platinum. This type of custom request adds little or no extra time to production. Upcharge, if any, is primarily determined by changes in the material.

Moderate custom

The beauty in the moderate custom processes lies in the fact that we can make changes to the original design of the piece if you are unhappy with it. We can change the width of a pendant or ring by changing its borders. And we can make a particular pattern larger or smaller, depending on your choice of course. We can also make a piece heavier, or take one pattern that you like from a particular pendant and move it to another.

We can also change clasps or ring mounts, add or subtract lengths from different chains, or make something extra-large or extra-small within our existing line. Sometimes these changes are relatively simple, but other times we will be creating drawings for collaboration.

Just note that these types of custom changes can add time to the project. Depending upon whether or not we have to create drawings, we may require a small down payment—which will be applied to the cost of the piece.

Full custom

This process means making something from scratch and from your own idea. It starts with a visit where you and the head Jeweller at Ickinger simply chat about what you want in terms of your unique piece.

The process will start with sketches and a rendered image of your design concept. And once you are happy and we have agreed to move forward, the design and execution will commence.

Like we mentioned above, the process can take a while and especially if it’s something as special as an engagement ring or wedding ring. But usually, it doesn’t take our team longer than 15 working days.
